The next Study Abroad Info Session will be held at North Meck High School on February 6, 2017. It will be open to all high school students as well as students beginning 9th grade in 2017. $25,000 scholarships available to SMHS Students to study in Germany through CIEE. No previous experience in German necessary. Application due 12/01/16. See/Email Ms. Majeski or Frau Rowland for more information.
Since 1947, CIEE has been the world leader in study abroad and international exchange programs. Operating as a nonprofit NGO, CIEE creates and administers programs that enable American high schoolers, university students, and educators to study and teach abroad.

South Mecklenburg High School World Language Magnet is dedicated to developing a global citizen within each student. Part of this journey is through our travel abroad and exchange experiences. We believe immersing students in other cultures through world language programs and sister school exchanges help prepare them for engaging in a global society.
Through travel our students:
The following two types of travel are normally offered:
1. South Meck HS offers shorter, foreign-travel experiences at the school-building level for "Summer Travel / Student Exchange Trips" arranged and accompanied by Teachers. Please talk to your individual teacher about his/her current plans. In addition, information will be updated here when available.
NOTE: Short-term travel with school-level Teachers and Staff are considered "Field Trips" are at the discretion of CMS. Input from State Department Travel Advisories is considered in the decision-making process.
2. The district can help you find a longer, CSIET-approved "Study Abroad" opportunities through the Global Studies Office.

- improve their world language skills.
- make connections with their host families allowing students to learn about the culture, hobbies and cuisine first hand.
- gain confidence as they experience life in other countries.

"Let's Get Started...Hosting...or Studying Abroad" (by CSIET)

Rotary Youth Exchange Program - more than 8,000 students each year travel to over 200 countries building cultural bridges by serving as ambassadors and Rotary is there to guide them and take part in the experience of creating global understanding.
Short-Term Program –family-to-family exchange and student leaders age 15-18½ spend approximately 3 weeks in a foreign country and their host sibling returns to spend 3 weeks with your family here in the US. Cost is approximately $450 plus airfare. Application deadline is February. Host Families – open your home to a Rotary exchange student for 3-3½ months and change their life – and yours! CBYX Scholarship
Application usually available in September and due in early December - Congress-Bundestag Scholarship is a full scholarship exchange program that offers young Americans the opportunity to live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for a year. You could be one of 50 students chosen to represent the Southeast United States (including Puerto Rico) as a CBYX youth ambassador. Become fluent in German, learn another culture and expand your horizons to the world! |
Education Travel & Culture
ETC's purpose is to promote international understanding and goodwill by providing high quality educational and cultural exchange programs in the United States and abroad. ETC provides inbound program opportunities for high school students throughout the world to study in an American high school and live with an American family. Host families provide room and board, a quiet place to study, and an American family experience for guest students during their semester or academic year in the United States. ETC's outbound program offers students the chance to study and live in a foreign country. Click here to find out more. |
AFS Intercultural Programs/USA (AFS-USA) has been a leader in international student exchange for more than 65 years. AFS-USA is a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization through which more than 3,000 students and adults are exchanged among its 50 partner countries annually.

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program
offers merit-based scholarships to spend an academic year in countries that may include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. This program increases understanding between people in the United States and people in countries with significant Muslim populations. Students live with host families, attend local high schools, do community service, and complete a capstone project. Applications for academic year 2016-17 programs are due December 1, 2015. Launched in 2006, the goal of NSLI-Y is to increase the number of young Americans with the language skills necessary to advance international dialogue and increase understanding between cultures. Alumni of NSLI-Y can become leaders in a variety of international fields in the private, academic or government sector. NSLI-Y is administered by American Councils for International Education, in cooperation with AFS-USA, iEARN, and other partner organizations.
Scholarships to participate in summer or academic year programs are available for the study of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. The merit based scholarships cover domestic and international travel, tuition and related academic expenses, daily language classes, supporting cultural activities, room and board, and secondary health benefits for travel abroad.
