2015-2016 Rotary Exchange STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Meet Hannah, a Rotary Exchange student who joins South Meck this year from Kassel, Germany where she attended Friedrichsgymnasium. Now in her second semester at South, Hannah loves the strong school spirit and the way students are involved with clubs or sports. She has adjusted to being in a school with about 2,000 more students than her home school, the longer class periods and the A-day/B-day system. At her home school last year she was enrolled in 11 classes lasting 45-90 minutes with six class periods per day broken up with two 20 minute breaks. This semester you may find Hannah in American History 2, Chorus, AP Environmental Science, German, Chamber Orchestra and AP Psychology classes.
Living in Charlotte, Hannah has enjoyed the many things to do and how pretty the city is, especially downtown. She really likes that you can get your license at such an early age “as in Germany you have to be 18 to drive alone, which I find very sad, because you can be way more independent when you can drive.” She also loves that the US has so many holidays “because I love holidays and celebrating them!”
As Hannah loves to travel, her host family has shown her Charleston, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, New York and California. Following graduation this June, her future hopes and plans include returning to Charlotte to visit her South Meck friends and host family.

2015-2016 AFS Student Spotlight
Agostina Mohlinger, Senior from Chaco, Argentina
Meet Agostina who joins South Meck this year from Luis Federico Leloir U.E.P N°48, a private school of 300 students where her school day begins at 7:30 a.m., ending at 12:30 p.m. There she was enrolled in 10 subjects per school year where the majority of her classes were taught in her homeroom with only the instructors changing classrooms. Being in a much larger high school, changing classrooms has been a unique experience as well as getting to choose her classes - American History I, Women's Ensemble, Health and Physical Education, English III, Honors Spanish III, American History II, Common Core Math III, Apparel and Textile Products I. Having lunch at school is also a new experience. She has enjoyed the strong South Meck school spirit and loyalty for school sports, going to watch the games.
Agostina loves to travel, already visiting the Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, México, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay. In the United States, she has been to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Disney, Hawaii and the Grand Canyon. With AFS she will travel to Washington, DC and see New York City. Besides travel, she also likes music, singing, watching series and movies, playing sports and shopping. Cook Out is her new favorite – why? One word – milkshakes!

Alberto Cenedese, Senior from
Conegliano, Italy
Meet Alberto who finds South Meck to be totally different than Liceo G. Marconi, his home high school in Conegliano, Italy (near Venice). His first difference is being part of 3,000 students daily walking campus, compared to his home high school population of 1,000. Another difference has been changing classrooms every block with a new mix of students each class. At home he has been part of a cohort of the same classmates (20-25) for the five years of high school where the different teachers come to your home classroom. At Liceo G. Marconi Alberto doesn’t get to select his courses. Instead, he is taking the same course subjects for five years - Math, English, Italian, History, P.E. and Anatomy, Religion, Science, Physics, Technical Drawing, Art History, Latin and Philosophy. Look for Alberto this fall semester at South in Honors American History, Honors Physics 1, Honors English 3, Team Sport and Novice Strength Training. Or you can cheer him on at Cross Country Team meets or as he prepares for basketball team try-outs.
Living in Charlotte, Alberto has been surprised by the size of the streets and cars, loving it that you can drive a car at age 16! It’s also surprised him that most people eat dinner around 6 p.m. as at home dinner is usually around 9 or 9:30 p.m.
